Since 1801, the City of Alexandria has celebrated George Washington’s birthday with a parade, making its George Washington Birthday Parade the oldest of its kind in the country. In 1976, the George Washington Birthday Celebration Committee (GWBCC) was established to organize the annual parade and other February events honoring Washington’s legacy in his adopted hometown.

Its members are appointed by the Alexandria City Council and include representatives from the American Legion; the City of Alexandria Pipe and Drums; the Director of the Transportation Division of the Department of Transportation and Environmental Services; the First Virginia Regiment of the Continental Line; the Friendship Veterans Fire Engine Association; Gadsby’s Tavern Museum Society; the George Washington Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution; the Kate Waller Barrett Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution; the Masonic Fraternity; seven citizen members (two of whom are veterans); an Alexandria high school student; and a representative of the Alexandria City Manager’s office. All meetings are now held at the Lloyd House at 220 N. Washington St. on the third Monday of every month, except in January when we meet on the second Monday, and February when we meet on the first Monday. Meetings begin at 7:00 p.m. The citizens of Alexandria are welcome to attend these meetings.
